Clinical Bottom Line/Effectiveness
Brief Background:
- Hellerwork is a form of deep tissue bodywork and movement therapy that was developed in the 1970s by aerospace engineer Joseph Heller.
- It is a form of Structural Integration (Rolfing®) that uses multiple techniques, including deep-tissue bodywork, movement education and verbal interaction to improve posture and movement patterns.
- Hellerwork takes place in a series of eleven sessions (versus ten for traditional Rolfing®). Each session includes about an hour of bodywork and a half hour of movement education. Each session focuses on a certain area of the body and the emotions believed to be related to that area. For example, the feet and arms are believed to be related to childhood, and the core muscles of the pelvis, abdomen, and spine are linked to repressed emotions. The practitioner uses soft tissue manipulation techniques and educates the client about how to sit, stand, and walk without causing strain to the body. Hellerwork practitioners also use "guided verbal dialogue" to address emotions that are believed to induce muscular holding patterns and affect breathing.
- Hellerwork professional certification involves a 1,250-hour program.
